Azulejo Colouring

Choose a colour, then tap a shape to fill it. Matching shapes fill together, so a few taps make a whole tile. There’s no wrong combination.

How it helps

Colouring a pattern asks for just enough attention to crowd out the chatter, and not so much that it becomes work.

  1. Pick a few colours

Traditional tiles use only a handful. Fewer choices means less deciding, and more calm.

  2. Fill slowly

Take a breath between taps if you like. Watch how each colour changes the pattern around it.

  3. Step back

Look at the repeated tile, and at your wall growing. It’s a small thing you made, start to finish.

Studies of colouring intricate, repeating patterns, such as mandalas and plaid designs, have found that it can lower anxiety more than free drawing on a blank page. The structure does some of the work for you.

Azulejos, glazed tiles, have covered walls, patios and staircases across Spain and Portugal for centuries. The patterns here are simple designs in that spirit, drawn for this page, and the colours come from the traditional glazes: cobalt, azure, ochre, orange, green and manganese.
